The Gin Swizzle is a classic Caribbean-inspired cocktail combining gin with lime juice, sugar, bitters, and club soda, served in a frosted highball glass that has been swizzled with a bar spoon or traditional swizzle stick. The swizzling technique — rapidly spinning a stick between the palms while submerged in the drink — rapidly chills the glass and creates an appealing frost on the exterior. It is a refreshing, medium-ABV gin drink.
History & Origins
Swizzle drinks originated in the Caribbean, where rum swizzles were made with a frilled branch from the Quararibea turbinata tree — the original swizzle stick — which was inserted into the drink and spun between the palms. The technique migrated to American and British cocktail culture in the 19th and 20th centuries and was adapted for gin, whisky, and other spirits. The Gin Swizzle's precise origin is disputed.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: fresh lime citrus and gin botanicals with a aromatic bitters spice note and a hint of sweetness from the sugar. Palate: tart and refreshing with lime acidity, gin's herbal complexity, and a gentle bitters spice, all extended by the club soda's effervescence. Finish: clean, citrusy, and slightly bitter with a refreshing botanical fade.
Pro Tip
Swizzle the drink by spinning a bar spoon rapidly between your palms rather than stirring normally — the motion chills the drink faster and frosts the glass for an authentic Swizzle presentation.
