Limeade is a non-alcoholic citrus refresher made from fresh lime juice, sugar, and soda water, garnished with lime peel for an aromatic finish. It delivers a bright balance of sweet and tart flavors in a tall glass. Simple to prepare, it is a classic warm-weather staple enjoyed worldwide.
History & Origins
Limeade has roots in tropical and subtropical regions where limes grow abundantly, with recipes appearing in British and American cookbooks as early as the 19th century. Its origin is disputed, though it closely resembles nimbu pani from South Asia and the limonades of the Caribbean. The fizzy soda-water version became a popular American soda fountain drink in the early 20th century.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Fresh zesty lime oil and clean citrus brightness from the peel. Palate: Brisk tartness balanced by dissolved sugar, with effervescent soda water adding lightness. Finish: Crisp and clean, with a lingering citrus tang.
Pro Tip
Squeeze the lime juice directly into the glass and stir thoroughly with sugar before adding soda water to ensure complete dissolving.
