Boil sugar and spices in water, leave in the water for 30 minutes. Strain the spiced water and mix with the wine. Heat slowly until short of boiling temperature. (To remove alcohol, let it boil for a while.) You may add lemon or orange juice to taste. Serve in irish coffee cup.

The word 'Glühwein' literally means 'glow wine' in German, referring to the warmth it imparts. It became institutionalized as a Christmas market drink in Germany and Austria in the 18th and 19th centuries and today remains one of the most recognized seasonal beverages in the German-speaking world.
