History & Origins
The Martini evolved from the Martinez cocktail of the 1880s, gradually becoming drier and more gin-forward through the early 20th century. Jerry Thomas's bar guide and later Harry Johnson's 1882 Manual both included early Martini-like recipes. The IBA lists the Dry Martini among the Unforgettables, and its cultural prominence — from James Bond's 'shaken, not stirred' to countless literary references — is unmatched in cocktail history.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Clean juniper and botanical gin aromatics with a whisper of dry vermouth herbs and briny olive. Palate: Crisp and spirit-forward with dry gin clarity, minimal sweetness, and a subtle herbal earthiness from the vermouth. Finish: Clean, dry, and warming with a long botanical and olive tail.
Pro Tip
Express a lemon peel over the drink and garnish with either the peel or an olive — never both — to maintain the clean, dry character of the Martini.
