History & Origins

Almeria takes its name from the coastal city in southern Spain, though the cocktail's precise origin and the connection to its namesake city are disputed. The combination of dark rum, coffee liqueur, and egg white places it in the tradition of creamy, spirit-forward cocktails that were popular in mid-20th century American and European bars. The use of Kahlúa as the coffee component became widespread after the liqueur's international distribution expanded in the 1960s.
