Martinez 2
Zutaten
- Gin 1 1/2 oz
- Sweet Vermouth 1 1/2 oz
- maraschino liqueur 1 tsp
- Angostura Bitters 2 dashes
Anweisungen
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir until chilled, and strain into a chilled coupe glass.
Martinez 2 is a spirit-forward stirred cocktail combining equal parts gin and sweet vermouth with maraschino liqueur and Angostura bitters, served in a chilled cocktail glass. It is a close relative of the original Martinez, widely regarded as the direct ancestor of the modern Martini. The balance of gin botanicals, sweet vermouth, and bitter complexity makes it a sophisticated aperitif.
History & Origins
The Martinez is generally credited to bartender Jerry Thomas, possibly created in San Francisco or Martinez, California in the 1880s, though its exact origin is disputed. The original recipe appears in the 1887 edition of Thomas's 'Bar-Tenders Guide' and is considered one of the most important cocktails in history as the progenitor of the Martini. This variant (Martinez 2) represents the classic spec of equal gin and sweet vermouth with maraschino.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Juniper and floral gin notes with sweet herbal vermouth and a faint cherry sweetness from the maraschino. Palate: Rich and complex with botanical gin, sweet vermouth body, almond-cherry maraschino sweetness, and Angostura spice. Finish: Long and warming with herbal bitterness and cherry tail.
Pro Tip
Stir over ice in a mixing glass for at least 40 stirs to fully chill and achieve the proper silky dilution before straining into a coupe.
