History & Origins
The Fizz category was codified in American bartending guides of the late 19th century, with the Gin Fizz as its archetypal expression. Henry C. Ramos of New Orleans created the famous Ramos Gin Fizz in 1888 as an elaboration of the basic formula. The IBA recognizes the Gin Fizz as one of its Unforgettable classics, reflecting its foundational role in cocktail history.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: fresh lemon citrus and gin juniper with a clean effervescent note. Palate: tart and refreshing with lemon acidity balanced by the powdered sugar's sweetness and the gin's botanical complexity, all lifted by the carbonated water. Shake all ingredients except the soda water very vigorously with ice, then strain into a highball glass over ice and add the soda water gently to preserve its effervescence.
