IBA ContemporaryClassic

History & Origins

The modern Tequila Sunrise is attributed to Bobby Lazoff and Billy Rice at the Trident restaurant in Sausalito, California, around 1972, though a different, brandy-based version of the same name existed in Tijuana in the 1940s. The drink gained enormous cultural visibility when the Eagles' 1973 hit 'Tequila Sunrise' and the Rolling Stones' 1972 tour cemented it as the cocktail of the era. The IBA classifies it as a Contemporary Classic.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Fresh orange juice and tequila's agave character, with a faint pomegranate sweetness from the grenadine. Palate: Sweet and fruity with orange juice dominating, tequila adding an earthy agave backbone, and grenadine contributing berry sweetness and depth as it integrates upward from the base. Finish: Sweet, citrusy, and smooth with a gentle agave warmth.

Pro Tip

Pour the grenadine slowly down the inside of the glass after adding tequila and OJ to achieve the cleanest sunrise gradient; avoid stirring until serving.
