Dark Strong

History & Origins

Port Wine Cocktail is a classic recipe of uncertain specific origin that reflects the long British tradition of mixing port — which became widely available through the Anglo-Portuguese wine trade established by the 1703 Methuen Treaty — with small amounts of spirits for warming effect. The combination of port and brandy is one of the simplest pre-Prohibition cocktail formulas. No single creator is credited.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Rich port with raisin, dried plum, and nut, with a warm brandy note on top. Palate: Intensely sweet and full-bodied with the port's characteristic dried fruit sweetness — fig, raisin, and dark cherry — amplified by the warmth and grape-spirit depth of the brandy. Finish: Sweet, warm, and persistent with a lingering fortified wine character.

Pro Tip

Use a tawny port for a nuttier, more oxidative character or a ruby port for a fresher, more fruit-forward version, and serve in a pre-chilled cocktail glass to keep the drink refreshingly cool.
