History & Origins
The Highland Fling takes its name from the traditional Scottish folk dance, and appears in early 20th-century American cocktail literature as part of a broader enthusiasm for Scotch-based mixed drinks. Its exact origin is disputed, though it closely resembles the Rob Roy family of stirred Scotch cocktails. The olive garnish distinguishes it from closer Martini relatives.
