Layering is the defining technique of the Dirty Nipple, a small sweet shot in which Kahlúa, Sambuca, and Baileys Irish Cream are poured in sequence so that each rests above the last. The liqueurs are selected for their differing densities, allowing the Baileys to settle as a distinct cream band across the top. Coffee, anise, and Irish cream register in turn as the layers are consumed, concentrating three contrasting flavors into a single small serving of roughly 18% ABV. It is served in a shot glass.
Dirty Nipple
Ingredientes
- Kahlua 1/2 oz
- Sambuca 1/2 oz
- Baileys Irish Cream 1/2 oz
Instrucciones
This is a layered shot - the Bailey's must be on top
History & Origins
The Dirty Nipple is a member of a family of provocatively named layered shots that became popular in American and European bars during the 1980s and 1990s. Its exact origin is disputed, though similar cream-topped shots were common across the bar scene of that era. The name is a play on the visual appearance of the layered cream atop darker liqueurs.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: sweet coffee and vanilla from the Kahlúa, anise from the Sambuca, and creamy Irish whiskey notes from the Baileys. Palate: initially creamy and sweet with chocolate-coffee richness, followed by a brief anise note from the Sambuca. Finish: soft, sweet, and warming with a lingering cream and coffee character.
Pro Tip
Pour the Kahlúa first, add the Sambuca, then slowly float the Baileys over the back of a spoon to achieve a clean, defined cream layer on top.
