History & Origins
Danbooka is a folk recipe with disputed origins, its name having no widely documented etymology, suggesting it originated as a personal or regional bar creation. The practice of adding high-proof spirits to coffee is a universal tradition across many cultures, from Irish Coffee to the Italian caffè corretto. Using Everclear — at 75.5% or 95% ABV depending on the state — rather than whiskey or brandy is an unusual choice that reflects college bar culture. No single creator has been credited.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Strong brewed coffee with the intense, neutral alcohol vapor of Everclear. Palate: Bitter and coffee-forward, with the Everclear adding a sharp, neutral alcohol heat; there is no sweetener to offset the intensity. Finish: Long and bitter, with a prolonged alcohol burn.
