Raspberry Julep
Zutaten
- Bourbon 2 oz
- Raspberry syrup 1/2 oz
- Mint 8
Anweisungen
Softly muddle the mint leaves and raspberry syrup in the bottom of the cup. Add crushed ice and Bourbon to the cup and then stir. Top with more ice, garnish with a mint sprig.
Raspberry Julep is a fruity variation on the classic Mint Julep, substituting raspberry syrup for sugar and muddling mint leaves with the syrup before adding bourbon and crushed ice. The raspberry syrup adds a sweet berry dimension that complements the bourbon's caramel depth, while the mint's herbal freshness remains a structural element of the drink. It is a modern craft take on America's most famous whiskey cocktail.
History & Origins
Raspberry Julep emerged from the broader movement of Mint Julep variations that developed in American craft cocktail culture during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as bartenders explored fruit-sweetener substitutions for the traditional sugar syrup in the classic template. The raspberry variation is a natural complement to bourbon given the spirit's affinity for fruit flavours, and the combination appears in numerous cocktail books and bar menus from the 1990s onward. No specific creator is credited.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Fresh muddled mint and sweet raspberry with warm bourbon caramel and vanilla beneath. Palate: A harmonious blend of cool mint and sweet berry from the raspberry syrup against the warmth and caramel depth of the bourbon; the combination is simultaneously refreshing and spirit-forward. Finish: Clean and warming with a lingering bourbon warmth, mint, and berry sweetness.
Pro Tip
Muddle the mint with the raspberry syrup before adding any ice so the syrup absorbs the mint oils without the cold temperature of the ice inhibiting the extraction of the aromatic compounds.
