FAQ
What is ABV?
ABV (Alcohol by Volume) is a standard measure of alcohol content expressed as a percentage. A spirit labeled 40% ABV means 40% of the liquid is pure ethanol.
How does ice dilution affect ABV?
Ice typically adds about 25% water volume to a cocktail through melting during shaking or stirring. This dilution lowers the final ABV while improving balance and mouthfeel.
How many calories are in a cocktail?
Alcohol contains approximately 7 calories per gram. This calculator estimates calories from alcohol content only, not from sugar in mixers or syrups.
What is a standard drink?
In the US, one standard drink contains 14 grams (0.6 oz) of pure alcohol. This equals roughly 12 oz of beer (5%), 5 oz of wine (12%), or 1.5 oz of spirits (40%).
Is ABV the same as proof?
In the US, proof is exactly twice the ABV percentage. An 80-proof spirit is 40% ABV. The British proof system is different and largely obsolete.
