Substituting vodka for gin, the Vodka Martini—also known as the Vodkatini or Kangaroo Cocktail—reframes the Martini around a neutral spirit. Vodka and dry vermouth are shaken or stirred with ice and strained into a cocktail glass, finished with an olive. Where the gin Martini relies on botanical complexity, this variation emphasises the vodka's clean purity, leaving the vermouth's herbal notes to supply much of the flavour. At roughly 18% ABV it is firmly spirit-forward. The drink gained global recognition through its association with James Bond, though purists continue to debate whether a vodka build qualifies as a true Martini.

History & Origins
The Vodka Martini emerged in the mid-20th century as vodka began displacing gin as the dominant clear spirit in American and British bars. Its association with James Bond in the Ian Fleming novels — Bond's preferred drink though he actually specified the Vesper in Casino Royale — cemented its status as a sophisticated cultural icon from the 1960s onward. The 'shaken not stirred' controversy it inspired has become one of the most enduring debates in cocktail culture.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Clean and neutral with dry vermouth's herbal, slightly wine-like character providing the primary aromatic interest; the olive contributes a saline, briny note. Palate: Dry and spirit-forward, with vodka's clean neutrality allowing vermouth's subtle herbal complexity to be more prominent than in a vodka-only drink; the olive adds a pleasant briny counterpoint. Finish: Dry, clean, and slightly herbal with a brief olive brine finish.
Pro Tip
Stir rather than shake for a crystal-clear drink with a silkier texture; shaking bruises the vodka and creates tiny ice shards that dilute and cloud the cocktail.
