History & Origins
Poppy Cocktail is a vintage American cocktail whose origins are uncertain, appearing in various bartending references from the mid-20th century. The combination of gin and white chocolate liqueur was an unusual pairing for the era, reflecting the experimental spirit of American cocktail culture between the World Wars and post-Prohibition. Its precise creator and origin are disputed and it has been largely overshadowed by more contemporary creations.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Dry gin botanicals — juniper, coriander — with a clean, sweet white chocolate note from the Crème de Cacao. Palate: A direct contrast between the dry, herbal bitterness of the gin and the sweet, smooth chocolate character of the white Crème de Cacao; despite the simple construction the two flavours create a surprisingly layered experience. Finish: Dry and moderately bitter with a fading white chocolate sweetness.
