History & Origins
Moranguito is a Portuguese bar shot of disputed origin, believed to have emerged in the late 20th century as absinthe and tequila became more widely available in European markets following the partial lifting of the absinthe ban. Its name and colour suggest a playful association with strawberries, despite containing none. No single creator or bar is definitively credited with its invention.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Dominant anise and fennel from the absinthe with earthy agave from the tequila and sweet pomegranate from the grenadine. Palate: An intense collision of bitter anise, smoky agave, and sweet grenadine with a fiery alcoholic heat throughout. Finish: Long and warming with strong anise and a hint of residual sweetness.
Pro Tip
Layer the grenadine last by pouring it slowly over the back of a spoon to create the distinctive red-over-clear gradient effect before serving as a shot.
