Pour beer into large mug, slowly add the 7-up (or Sprite).
Radler is a refreshing German beer-and-lemonade mixed drink combining equal parts beer and 7-Up (or Sprite), creating a lighter, more effervescent and sweeter alternative to straight beer. Known as Shandy in the UK and Panaché in France, it is celebrated as a low-alcohol, thirst-quenching drink particularly popular during summer and outdoor activities. Its simplicity and refreshing quality have made it a beloved casual drink across Europe.
History & Origins
Radler was invented by Franz Xaver Kugler, who in June 1922 mixed his remaining beer supply with lemon soda at his tavern near Munich to serve a large unexpected crowd of cyclists, naming the drink "Radler" — German for cyclist. The drink spread rapidly across Germany and Austria as a cycling-culture refreshment and eventually became a staple of European casual drinking. Its UK equivalent, the Shandy, has independent origins in British pub culture and predates the Radler by several decades.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Hoppy beer with a bright lemon-lime sweetness from the soda. Palate: Light and refreshing with the soda diluting the beer's bitterness and contributing sweetness and additional carbonation, creating a highly drinkable, clean, and gently hoppy experience with a citrusy edge. Finish: Clean, slightly sweet, and refreshing with a very gentle hop bitterness.
Pro Tip
Pour the beer first into a large mug and then add the 7-Up slowly down the side of the glass to minimise foaming and preserve the maximum carbonation of both components.
