Lassi - A South Indian Drink
المكونات
- Yoghurt 1/2 cup plain
- Water 1 1/4 cup cold
- Cumin seed 1/2 tsp ground roasted
- Salt 1/4 tsp
- Mint 1/4 tsp dried
التعليمات
Blend in a blender for 3 seconds. Lassi is one of the easiest things to make, and there are many ways of making it. Basically, it is buttermilk (yoghurt whisked with water), and you can choose almost any consistency that you like, from the thinnest to the thickest. Serve cold.
Lassi is a traditional South Indian chilled yogurt drink that blends plain yogurt with cold water, roasted cumin, salt, and dried mint to create a savory, cooling, and highly refreshing beverage. Distinct from the sweet North Indian lassi, this salted version is a common accompaniment to spicy South Indian meals. The roasted cumin adds a characteristic earthy, smoky depth.
History & Origins
Lassi has been consumed on the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years, with documented references dating back to 1000 BCE in Vedic texts. The savory, salted version is most closely associated with South India and Punjab, where it has been a staple of daily life alongside rice and dahl. The roasted cumin variation is a specific South Indian tradition used to aid digestion and cool the body.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Tangy yogurt, earthy roasted cumin, and a gentle dried-mint freshness. Palate: Cooling and savory — yogurt's characteristic tang is amplified by salt and balanced by the aromatic warmth of roasted cumin and the herbal freshness of dried mint. Finish: Clean and refreshing, with a lingering earthy cumin note.
Pro Tip
Blend briefly for only 3–5 seconds to achieve a frothy but not overly aerated texture; serve immediately over ice for maximum refreshing effect.
