History & Origins
The Vodka and Tonic follows the tradition of spirit-and-tonic highballs established most famously by the Gin and Tonic, a drink whose origins lie in British colonial India where quinine-containing tonic water was consumed to prevent malaria. The substitution of vodka for gin became popular as vodka rose to dominance as the world's most consumed spirit from the 1970s onward. The drink's origin is disputed as a natural evolution of the gin and tonic format.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Clean and neutral vodka with a crisp, slightly bitter quinine note from the tonic water. Palate: Dry and refreshing, with tonic's bitter quinine character providing the primary flavor since vodka contributes virtually no taste compounds; the bitterness is balanced by tonic's sweetness. Finish: Dry, slightly bitter, and clean with a brief quinine linger.
Pro Tip
Use a premium tonic with natural quinine for a more pronounced, complex bitter note, and garnish with a lime wedge to add a citrus accent.
