The Salty Dog is a simple highball combining gin (or vodka) with grapefruit juice and a pinch of salt, served over ice in a highball glass. The salt enhances the grapefruit's natural bitterness and sweetness while softening the gin's botanicals. It is closely related to the Greyhound, the only difference being the addition of salt.
History & Origins
The Salty Dog's origins are disputed, with some accounts placing its creation in the 1950s and attributing it to American beach bars where grapefruit juice was a popular mixer. The name is a maritime slang term for an experienced sailor, fitting the drink's refreshing, sea-breezy character. It became an IBA-adjacent classic and is widely served as a lower-key alternative to the Greyhound.
