Radioactive Long Island Iced Tea is an extreme variation of the classic Long Island, doubling the spirit count by adding Chambord, Midori, and Malibu rum alongside the standard rum, vodka, tequila, gin, and triple sec. The Chambord and Midori introduce raspberry and melon flavours that push the drink's colour toward a vivid green, earning the "radioactive" designation. It is an exceptionally potent, sweet cocktail intended for adventurous drinkers.
History & Origins
Radioactive Long Island Iced Tea is a modern American variation of the classic Long Island Iced Tea, itself a cocktail of disputed origin variously credited to Robert Butt in New York or to Tennessee's Long Island community during Prohibition. The amplified recipe with additional liqueurs emerged in the American bar culture of the 1990s and 2000s as a more extreme, colourful, and flavourful version of the potent original. No single creator is definitively credited.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: A complex blend of rum, melon from the Midori, raspberry from the Chambord, and coconut from the Malibu, with an intense spirit warmth throughout. Palate: Sweet and fruit-forward with multiple liqueur flavours — melon, raspberry, coconut — layered over the standard Long Island base of four spirits and triple sec, creating a very sweet yet highly alcoholic experience. Finish: Sweet, fruity, and powerfully warming with a very long spirit finish.
Pro Tip
Sip very slowly over a large amount of ice as this drink contains eight measures of spirit and has a deceptively sweet, drinkable character that masks a very high alcohol content.
