History & Origins
The Sling is among the earliest named cocktail categories, documented in American bartending manuals from the early 19th century. It was defined simply as spirit sweetened with sugar and served in a long format, predating the widespread availability of ice and carbonated mixers. The gin sling evolved through the 19th and 20th centuries and gave rise to more elaborate variations including the Singapore Sling.
