Downshift

The Downshift is a fruity, high-energy party cocktail made with fruit punch, Sprite (lemon-lime soda), tequila, and a float of Bacardi 151 high-proof rum on top, served in a hurricane glass. The fruit punch and Sprite provide a sweet, bubbly base, the tequila adds body and spirit character, and the 151 float creates both a dramatic appearance and an intense alcohol kick.

Bacardi 151 (75.5% ABV) is floated on top because its high alcohol content and lower density relative to the fruit punch base allow it to remain on the surface when poured gently over the back of a spoon. The float creates a visible layer and, historically, has allowed the drink to be briefly ignited for a flaming presentation, though this practice is strongly discouraged in most bar environments due to fire safety concerns.

The Downshift is considerably strong due to the combination of tequila and the Bacardi 151 float, making it a cocktail suited to careful, responsible consumption. It is a party-style drink popular at college events and tropical-themed gatherings. Bartenders today frequently substitute a standard rum float for the 151 since Bacardi 151 was discontinued from commercial production in 2016, though it may still be found in some markets.
