History & Origins
The San Francisco cocktail is a modern creation of disputed origin, likely developed in European cocktail bars during the 1980s when layered, colorful drinks enjoyed widespread popularity. Its name evokes the iconic California city, though no specific connection to San Francisco has been established. It belongs to a category of fruit-based vodka cocktails that emerged as vodka became the dominant base spirit globally.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Sweet ripe banana from the crème de banane with orange juice brightness and a hint of pomegranate from the grenadine. Palate: Very sweet and fruity, with banana liqueur and orange juice combining for a tropical character; grenadine adds a berry sweetness at the base. Finish: Sweet and soft, with a lingering banana and citrus note.
Pro Tip
Pour the grenadine gently down the inside of the glass last to achieve the layered color gradient without mixing.
