The Godfather is an IBA Contemporary Classic built from Scotch whisky and amaretto served over ice in an old-fashioned glass, combining the malt and smoke of Scotch with the sweet almond character of the amaretto. The two spirits complement each other naturally with no additional mixing required. It is a simple, spirit-forward sipper that requires no special technique.
History & Origins
The Godfather cocktail takes its name from Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 masterpiece film 'The Godfather' and is believed to have been created around the same time the film was released. The IBA recognized it as a Contemporary Classic, reflecting its broad global adoption. A version substituting vodka for Scotch became known as the Godmother.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Scotch malt and smoke with the sweet almond and apricot character of the amaretto. Palate: bold and spirit-forward with Scotch's grain and smoke complexity balanced by the amaretto's sweet nuttiness, creating a surprisingly harmonious combination. Finish: long, warm, and gently sweet with lingering Scotch oak and almond.
Pro Tip
Use a moderately peated blended Scotch for the classic balance — a heavily peated Islay malt can overwhelm the amaretto, while a very light Scotch may disappear behind it.
