Layer the Kahlua, Sambucca and Grand Marnier into a shot glas in that order. Better than B-52

Shot Strong

The B-53 is a variation on the classic B-52 shot, swapping Baileys for Sambuca to create a more anise-forward, intensely sweet layered shooter with Kahlúa and Grand Marnier. At 25.48% ABV, it is stronger than its famous cousin and features the distinctive licorice character of Sambuca as a striking middle layer. The combination creates an unusual but harmonious blend of coffee, anise, and orange.

History & Origins

The B-53 is a bar-culture derivative of the famous B-52 shot, created to provide a bolder, more herbaceous variation with Sambuca replacing the creamy Baileys layer. Its origin is disputed, emerging from the creative experimentation of bartenders in the 1980s and 1990s who were riffing on the layered shot format. The name follows the military aircraft naming convention established by the B-52.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Roasted coffee from the Kahlúa, the assertive anise and licorice of Sambuca, and the warm orange-brandy scent of Grand Marnier. Palate: Intensely sweet with distinct layers — coffee leads, then a bold anise surge from the Sambuca, followed by the orange and cognac richness of Grand Marnier. Finish: Long and warming, with a persistent anise-licorice note.

Pro Tip

Layer in strict order — Kahlúa first, then Sambuca, then Grand Marnier — using the back of a spoon to keep the layers clean.
