Kool First Aid is an extremely high-proof party shot that combines 151-proof rum with a small amount of Tropical Kool-Aid mix in a double shot glass. The Kool-Aid provides a thin veneer of tropical sweetness over what is essentially near-neat overproof rum, making this one of the strongest cocktails in any collection. The name is an ironic play on the idea of a 'remedy.'
History & Origins
High-proof rum shots, often made from 151-proof Bacardi or Everclear, became a staple of American college party culture in the 1980s and 1990s when extreme-strength novelty shots were a common feature of bar culture. The addition of flavored Kool-Aid powder to soften the rum's intensity is a home-bar innovation from this same era. Its exact origin is disputed.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Powerful raw rum heat, barely tempered by a faint tropical-fruit sweetness from the Kool-Aid. Palate: Intensely hot and spiritous — the 151-proof rum burns immediately, with a thin layer of tropical sweetness from the Kool-Aid providing minimal attenuation. Finish: Extremely long and fiery, dominated entirely by overproof rum heat.
