Refreshing LowABV

History & Origins

Wine coolers emerged as a commercial category in the United States in the early 1980s, when Californian producers California Cooler and Bartles & Jaymes popularized the format of bottled wine mixed with fruit juice and carbonation. The home version — wine plus soda — has existed far longer as an informal refresher, following the European tradition of lengthening wine with sparkling water (Schorle in Germany, Spritzer in Austria). The specific recipe's origin is disputed.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Wine fruit and the sweet citrus of lemon-lime soda, lightly effervescent. Palate: Light and refreshing, with the wine's character — whether the berry of red or the crisp apple of white — diluted by the soda's sweetness and carbonation into an approachable, easy-drinking beverage. Finish: Sweet, lightly effervescent, and clean with a brief wine character.

Pro Tip

Use a well-chilled, crisp white wine for the best result — lemon-lime soda's sweetness makes it more forgiving, but a quality wine produces a noticeably superior cooler.
