Citrus Creamy

History & Origins

The Whitecap Margarita is a modern variation on the classic Margarita, which itself was created — according to the most widely cited account — by Carlos Herrera at Rancho La Gloria in Tijuana in 1938, though numerous competing origin stories exist. The cream of coconut variation is a late 20th-century development that reflects the influence of the Piña Colada and the popularity of coconut as a cocktail flavor in American tiki and tropical drink culture. The specific recipe is of disputed origin.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Tequila's agave earthiness with sweet, tropical cream of coconut and fresh lime citrus. Palate: Creamy and sweet from the cream of coconut, with tequila's agave character providing a grounding earthiness; lime juice delivers a tart citrus counterpoint that prevents the coconut from becoming cloying. Finish: Smooth, sweet, and coconut-forward with a lingering lime tartness.

Pro Tip

Blend with enough ice to achieve a thick, smooth consistency and serve immediately before the drink begins to melt and thin.
