Herbal Strong

History & Origins

The Turf Cocktail appeared in Victorian-era American bartending guides, including Harry Johnson's 1882 'New and Improved Illustrated Bartender's Manual.' It predates the modern dry Martini and reflects an era when bartenders routinely added small amounts of bitters and anise to gin-and-vermouth combinations to create complexity. The horseracing-themed name was common in an era when cocktails were often named for sporting events and social pastimes.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Dry vermouth's herbal and slightly oxidative notes with gin's juniper and the distinctive anise note from the small measure of anis and a bitter-orange character from the bitters. Palate: Dry and complex, with the interplay of gin botanicals, vermouth herbaceousness, anise warmth, and bitters creating a layered and sophisticated profile; the orange peel adds a citrus aromatic accent. Finish: Dry, slightly bitter, and herbal with lingering anise and orange oil.

Pro Tip

Stir slowly with plenty of ice to achieve optimal dilution and temperature without clouding the drink, and use a large-format ice cube in the mixing glass.
