History & Origins
The Negroni is named after Count Camillo Negroni, who reportedly asked Florentine bartender Fosco Scarselli at Caffè Casoni to strengthen his customary Americano by replacing the soda water with gin in 1919. The drink rapidly spread from Florence throughout Italy and eventually the world, becoming one of the defining cocktails of the 20th century. The Campari company later corroborated elements of this account, though some historians dispute the exact details.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Aromatic botanicals from the gin, bittersweet orange and herbal complexity from the Campari, and rich vermouth spice. Palate: A beautifully balanced interplay of bitter Campari, sweet vermouth, and dry gin botanicals, with orange and herbal notes weaving throughout. Finish: Long, pleasantly bitter, and warming with a lingering botanical and citrus echo.
Pro Tip
Always stir rather than shake a Negroni to preserve its clarity and achieve the proper level of dilution, then express the oils from an orange peel over the glass before garnishing.
