One of the most herbal drinks in the cocktail canon, Jewel of the Nile stirs gin together with equal measures of Green and Yellow Chartreuse. The two Chartreuse expressions — one fiery and aggressively herbaceous, the other honey-sweet and mild — complement each other, while the gin ties their botanicals into a single aromatic whole. Stirred over ice and strained into a cocktail glass, it climbs above 33 percent ABV, placing it firmly among intense sipping cocktails. Its botanical density and high strength make it a study in herbal liqueurs more than a casual refresher.

- Yellow Chartreuse 1/2 oz

History & Origins
The Jewel of the Nile is a mid-20th century American cocktail that exploits the unique properties of Chartreuse, the French herbal liqueur produced by Carthusian monks since 1737 using 130 secret plant ingredients. Using both expressions simultaneously was a device to balance the Green Chartreuse's intensity with the Yellow's gentleness. Its exact origin is disputed, but it appears in several classic American cocktail books.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: An extraordinary herbal complexity — mint, tarragon, angelica, and saffron from the Chartreuse expressions, with gin's juniper and citrus beneath. Palate: Bold and intensely herbal, the Green Chartreuse's heat and complexity is softened by the Yellow's honey sweetness, while gin provides a botanical framework. Finish: Extremely long and warming, with herbs, honey, and juniper lingering for minutes.
Pro Tip
Stir well over ice and strain cold — this drink rewards contemplation; sip slowly to appreciate the extraordinary herbal complexity of the two Chartreuse expressions.
