History & Origins
The English Rose appears in mid-20th century bartending guides as a classic gin cocktail in the sour and flip tradition of the early cocktail canon. Its name likely evokes the floral, rosy color imparted by the grenadine and apricot brandy. The exact originator of the recipe is not recorded and its authorship is disputed.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: juniper and gin botanicals with apricot stone fruit, a floral rose note from the grenadine, and a lift of lemon citrus. Palate: moderately sweet and fruity up front with the dry vermouth adding a herbal dryness and the lemon providing tartness. Finish: herbal, lightly bitter, and citrusy with a gentle sweetness from the sugar rim.
Pro Tip
Rub the rim with lemon juice and dip in superfine rather than coarse sugar for an even, elegant crust that complements rather than overwhelms the cocktail.
