History & Origins
The Martini's origins are fiercely disputed, with competing claims tracing it to 19th-century California and to New York. The earliest documented recipes from the 1880s and 1890s included sweet vermouth, and the modern dry version evolved through the early 20th century as dry vermouth became fashionable. The IBA recognizes the Dry Martini as one of its canonical Unforgettable classics.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: pronounced juniper and gin botanicals with a whisper of the floral, herbal dry vermouth. Palate: clean, crisp, and intensely spirit-forward, with a soft herbal complexity from the vermouth and a subtle briney note from the olive garnish. Finish: long, dry, and botanical with a warming gin heat.
Pro Tip
Chill the cocktail glass in the freezer for at least 15 minutes before straining, and stir — not shake — for at least 30 seconds with large, clear ice to achieve proper dilution without cloudiness.
