History & Origins
Dark and Stormy originated in Bermuda, where Gosling Brothers — who have been producing rum there since the early 19th century — combined their Black Seal rum with the local Barritts ginger beer to create the drink. Gosling Brothers holds a trademark on the name 'Dark 'n' Stormy' when the cocktail is made with their rum. The IBA recognized it as part of its New Era Drinks category, acknowledging its status as a modern classic with genuine geographic heritage.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Dark rum's rich molasses and tropical fruit, with the sharp, spicy ginger of the ginger beer. Palate: The dark rum's deep, complex sweetness and warmth is enlivened by the ginger beer's spicy carbonation; together they create a beautifully harmonious, refreshing drink. Finish: Warm, gingery, and medium-length with a pleasant molasses fade.
Pro Tip
Pour the ginger beer into the glass first and then float the dark rum over the back of a spoon on top for a dramatic two-tone presentation — storm clouds above a dark sea.
