History & Origins
The Blackthorn takes its name from the blackthorn shrub (Prunus spinosa), whose small, dark sloe berries are used to infuse the gin base of sloe gin. This connection to the ingredient is characteristic of 19th and early 20th century cocktail naming conventions. The recipe appears in early 20th century American cocktail guides, though its precise origin is disputed.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The distinctive tart-sweet berry scent of sloe gin, with herbal vermouth notes and the bright citrus of the lemon peel. Palate: Sweet and fruity from the sloe gin, with the sweet vermouth adding a wine-like body and herbal depth; the balance tips slightly toward sweetness. Finish: Medium-length, pleasantly sweet and berry-forward.
Pro Tip
Stir rather than shake to preserve the clarity of this elegant drink and garnish with a fresh lemon peel that has been expressed over the glass.
