History & Origins
Balmoral takes its name from Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the Royal Family's Scottish Highland retreat. The cocktail belongs to the tradition of Scottish-themed whisky aperitif drinks and likely emerged from the Edinburgh or London bar scene, though its precise origin is disputed. Its format as a stirred, spirit-forward cocktail with vermouth and bitters is consistent with pre-Prohibition American and British cocktail styles.
