Jewel of the Nile is a stirred, spirit-forward cocktail that combines gin with equal measures of both Green and Yellow Chartreuse, creating one of the most herbal and botanically complex drinks in the cocktail canon. History & Origins
The Jewel of the Nile is a mid-20th century American cocktail that exploits the unique properties of Chartreuse, the French herbal liqueur produced by Carthusian monks since 1737 using 130 secret plant ingredients. Using both expressions simultaneously was a device to balance the Green Chartreuse's intensity with the Yellow's gentleness. Its exact origin is disputed, but it appears in several classic American cocktail books.
