The Godmother is a two-ingredient cocktail that replaces the Scotch of the classic Godfather with vodka, combining it with amaretto over ice in an old-fashioned glass. The vodka's neutral spirit character allows the amaretto's sweet almond and apricot flavors to become the dominant impression of the drink. It is a smoother, more accessible sibling of the Godfather.
History & Origins
The Godmother was created as a direct variation of the Godfather, substituting vodka for Scotch to create a softer, more widely approachable version. Both drinks emerged around the early 1970s and became classic bar staples. The IBA lists the Godfather as a Contemporary Classic, and the Godmother is widely accepted as its established companion.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: clean vodka spirit with the sweet almond and apricot warmth of amaretto. Palate: smooth and sweet with the amaretto's marzipan-like flavor dominating, supported by the clean, neutral vodka base. Finish: gentle, warm, and sweet with lingering almond and a clean spirit fade.
