The AT&T cocktail takes its name from the American telecommunications corporation, likely coined as a bar joke referencing a connection between two spirits — vodka and gin — just as the company connected telephone networks. Its origin is disputed, and it belongs to the informal tradition of bar-culture named cocktails with humorous references rather than a documented inventor. The combination of gin and vodka with tonic became popular in the 1980s and 1990s.
