IBA ContemporaryClassic

The Harvey Wallbanger is an IBA Contemporary Classic that builds a Screwdriver base of vodka and orange juice and then floats Galliano herbal liqueur on top, served in a Collins glass. The Galliano float adds a distinctive vanilla-herbal note to the classic orange-vodka combination without fully integrating into the drink. It became one of the most iconic American cocktails of the 1970s.

History & Origins

The Harvey Wallbanger was created by mixologist Donato 'Duke' Antone in Los Angeles in the 1950s and popularized in the 1970s through an aggressive marketing campaign by Galliano. The drink's name is attributed to a California surfer named Harvey who, after losing a surfing competition, consoled himself with multiple Screwdrivers with Galliano and kept walking into walls. The IBA recognizes it as a Contemporary Classic.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: fresh orange juice and clean vodka with the distinctive vanilla-anise of Galliano floating on the surface. Palate: sweet and orange-forward with vodka providing the spirit base, and the Galliano float gradually incorporating to add herbal-vanilla complexity. Finish: smooth, fruity, and herbal with a lingering vanilla and anise note from the Galliano.

Pro Tip

Pour the vodka and orange juice over ice first and stir, then float the Galliano by pouring it over the back of a bar spoon to create a distinct layered presentation before serving.
